In Cedar Rapids, IA, a homeowner faced daily frustration and vehicle damage from a car bottoming out on their driveway—a direct result of uneven, settled concrete panels. Open gaps and unsealed control joints allowed rainwater to wash away the underlying subgrade soil, creating subterranean voids that caused the heavy slabs to sink and tilt.

System Design Specialist Chris Hebbel evaluated the driveway, diagnosing active soil erosion as the root cause of the differential settlement. Chris developed a targeted, non-invasive lifting and sealing strategy, which was executed on site by Foreman Justin Maddox Jr. and crew member Brantly.

The team first used the PolyLevel® geopolymer injection system, drilling discrete ports to inject expanding polyurethane foam directly into the voids beneath the sunken panels. The foam expanded rapidly, compacting the loose subgrade and lifting the concrete slabs back to a flush, level elevation. To prevent future soil washout, Justin and Brantly prepped and sealed all open cracks and joints using NexusPro® joint sealant, establishing a durable, flexible barrier against water infiltration and freeze-thaw cycles.

Keith N. has many rental properties in the Cedar Rapids area. He is always putting his tenants’ safety first. A few of his townhomes’ sidewalks were posing hazardous walkways for them. He made a call to MidAmerica Basement Systems to have PolyLevel injected. PolyLevel is a mudjacking technique that injects a foam to level concrete slabs. Now Keith can rest assure his tenants will have a safe ground to walk on.

When concrete stairs sink, they tend to pull away from the structures they are placed against. In Cedar Rapids, JoAnn was having this issue. Her concrete stairs leading to her front stoop had sunken, leaving a large gap between the two, allowing water to seep in between. With the water seeping in between, it was causing the ground underneath to washout, making the stairs sink even more. PolyLevel was introduced to JoAnn to address her issue. PolyLevel is injected under the concrete stairs to fill the void that has been created, and lift and level the stairs back to their original position. NexusPro Joint Sealant was than applied to seal the crack, preventing future water intrusion.

Overtime, the garage slab at Grant’s property began to sink, and due to the weight of the garage, some areas cracked. He was concerned about how he was going to replace the slab due to it being the main support of his garage’s foundation. Cole had offered him the solution of PolyLevel and NexusPro Joint Sealant to lift and repair the sunken slab. PolyLevel was injected under the slab to stabilize and lift the garage, without the worry of the heavy building on the slab. The lifting force of the PolyLevel ranges between 2,000 to 4,000 pounds per square foot. Soon the slab is level once again, and the cracks are sealed with NexusPro. NexusPro protects the cracks from becoming worse overtime, especially is the area is not treated with PolyLevel.

Grant was noticing sloping in his driveway but didn’t realize how much it had sunk until the step up to his sidewalk. The step up to the sidewalk entrance had become higher on one side, making it an unsafe step for him and his guests to access. PolyLevel is a lightweight material that is injected to fill voids and stabilize the area, and then expands to lift and level the concrete. The driveway is once again level, and the step is no longer a tripping threat to Grant and his guests.
